Sunday School News

The March mission offering will be given to the Kittson County Care & Share food pantry in Lake Bronson because March is Minnesota Foodshare Month.  No offering envelope will be sent home with the students.  Instead they are each asked to bring a non-perishable food item on March 7 or whenever they can in the month.

The pastor is asking a different Sunday School class each Sunday in March to choose the gift item to be purchased with half of the offering from the previous Wednesday’s Lenten offering.  For instance, on Feb. 21 the 8th & 9th graders chose to purchase a goat for $100 and a set of hen & chicks for $40 with the $140 offering on Feb. 17.  Check the bulletin board in the Social Hall each week.

The Sunday School students will sing at First Lutheran Church on Palm Sunday, March 28, at   Please meet downstairs to warm up.  Each student will get a palm to carry into the church and then later to take home as they sing “Hosanna!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”

Bible Camp

On February 28 the Sunday School children viewed a video about Bible camp provided by Pathways which operates Lake of the Woods Bible Camp near Baudette.  Brochures from Pathways were handed out to each student to take home.  Please note the many options for camping for people of all ages.  Information and registration is available online at pathwaysbiblecamps.com.  First Lutheran Church has camperships available which will be paid in May when the total number of campers for the summer is known.  Last year it was $100 for each camper.  Camperships are not limited to Pathways camps only, but are limited to Lutheran camps.  For instance, anyone attending Park River Bible Camp in North Dakota or Green Lake Bible Camp in Minnesota may be given a campership since both of those camps are affiliated with the ELCA.  But Lake of the Woods Bible camp is the camp we have supported since its beginning in 1933.

The Little Lutheran is a magazine for children aged 6 and under and is designed to help parents and congregations nurture our youngest members in the faith.  It helps children develop a relationship with God, who loves them dearly, and with Jesus as their savior and friend.  This colorful and sturdy magazine will arrive in the child's name ten times a year packed with art, stories, songs, prayers, activities, and more.  The Little Lutheran makes a good gift from grandparents, godparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and others to the children in their lives.

3rd grade

At the beginning of third grade the students in Sunday School are given a Bible by the First Lutheran Women (WELCA) for use at home and at Sunday School.  Since they are just beginning to read, they are given a copy of the Good News Bible, sometimes called "Today's English Version," which is written in language appropriate for a beginning reader.

5th grade

In fifth grade Sunday School students attend a special class with the pastor five Tuesdays in preparation for receiving holy communion for the first time on the first Sunday in November.  They come to a deeper understanding of Holy Communion through a video "Welcome to God's Table," a booklet "Come to God's Table," conversation with the pastor and with parents, and breadmaking.

8th-9th grades

When young people enter 8th grade they begin a two year course of instruction with the pastor in preparation for a making a statement of faith and being confirmed in May of the 9th grade year.  During this time they attend Sunday School classes but generally do not participate in the opening exercises.  Confirmation classes are held after school on Wednesdays.
