Final Brunch on June 14

The First Lutheran Youth who are attending the 2015 ELCA National Youth Gathering will have their final Sunday brunch fundraiser on June 14, Flag Day, right after morning worship at the church.  They thank you all for your support and your generosity in helping them raise the funds to attend this Gathering in Detroit.  They will be traveling in a group of 42 youth and 10 adults from Kittson County.  God bless them on the journey.  They will report back to the congregation some time in August.

Senior Recognition Sunday

Baccalaureate 2015

After the baccalaureate service on May 20, 2015 at Tri-County High School, the five (out of 15) graduates from First Lutheran Church took a photo with Pastor Halverson.  He confirmed them all and baptized two of them as infants.  The others joined the congregation a bit later.  Christina K., Hailey O., Jadyn N., Pastor H., Easton F., and Logan E..

SUMMER KICK OFF  will be on May 31st.  More information to follow.  Watch the bulletin board at church or Facebook.

During the month of May all of the many purposes donated to the Youth Group will be displayed and set out for you to purchase.  Proceeds will go toward this summer's Detroit Lutheran Youth Gathering trip.

The third annual Red Hawks trip is scheduled for June (check with Beth for the exact date).  Game time is 12:30 p.m.  Leave Karlstad at 8:00 a.m.  Get back to Karlstad at 7:30 p.m.  Cost is only $20 for ticket and transportation.  Please Register by Sunday, May 10th.  Forms are available at church.  It's for grade 3 and up - and their parents, if they wish to go.

Congratulations to Bennett Amb who was elected to the Northwestern Minnesota Synod youth board representing Conference One (LaRoKi) congregations (Lake of the Woods, Roseau, and Kittson counties).

Congratulations to our Tri-County High School 2015 graduates: Easton Fossell, Christina Knutson, Hailey Olson, Jadyn Nelson, and Logan Englund.  They will be honored by the youth group on May 17 at the Sunday School program at First Lutheran Church.

Congratulations to Tanner Knutson, former FLY (First Lutheran Youth), who was elected student body president at Concordia College of Moorhead MN, a college of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) with 2,500 students.

Fundraisers for the National Youth Gathering in Detroit in July

Laura Anderson is attending the 2015 National Youth Gathering in Detroit as a young adult volunteer.  This is separate from the teenagers and their older adult chaperones/sponsors who are traveling together from Kittson County.  Laura’s family is having a bake sale at First Lutheran Church on Sunday, April 12, after worship to help raise funds for her travel costs to Detroit where she will be working at the youth gathering.  Any help to speed her on her way will be greatly appreciated.


The Bethel Women of Karlstad will have their annual spring supper on Thursday, April 9, from 4:30 to 6:30.   This year they have designated the proceeds from the supper to help the local youth to attend the 2015 National Youth Gathering in Detroit in July.  The youth are deeply appreciative of this generosity.  Supplemental funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans have also been obtained for this event.


The National Youth Gathering Youth will once again be serving brunch at First Lutheran Church on Sunday, April 19, after morning worship as they continue to raise funds to attend the July 2015 event. Thank you for your generous support for their many fund raisers this year.  First Lutheran Youth (FLY) will be joining other Kittson County Youth to travel together to Detroit stopping in Minneapolis for a “Feed My Starving Children” service event, briefly at the Mall of America, and at the Navy Pier in Chicago on the way home. Many of the events in Detroit will be a Ford Field.


The first ever LAKE BRONSON ADVENTURE RACE will be on Saturday, May 9, starting at 9:30 a.m. at Lake Bronson State Park in Kittson County.  Teams of 3 will canoe 2 miles, bicycle 4 miles, walk/run on foot 3.5 miles, and geocache along the way.  Teams must provide bicycles for each member of the team.  Canoes, paddles, and life jackest will be provided.  Cost is $120 per team.  All proceeds go to the Kittson Youth summer trip to the National Youth Gathering in Detroit.  Only ope to the first 16 teams.  For more information or to register online click here or call Pastor Frank Johnson at 763-221-0603.

Lenten suppers by the youth group 2015

The youth of our parish will once again be serving supper before Lenten services on the five Wednesdays between Ash Wednesday and Holy Week, that is February 25 through March 25.  Please watch for a letter in the mail about what to bring and when to serve.  These meals are fundraisers for the youth group, so the participation of all is very important.  And they are a prelude to the Lenten services, so participation in the Lenten services is very important, also.

Auction & Variety Show

  The Third Annual Variety Show, Silent Auction, and live Servant Auction by the Kittson County Youth at Maria Lutheran Church of Kennedy MN on Sunday, February 15, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00.  All proceeds are for the 42 youth and 10 adults attending the ELCA's National Youth Gathering in Detroit MI in July.   Come and join in an afternoon of entertainment, auctions, and much more.  The silent auction with bars and coffee will go from 2:00 to 3:00.  The variety show begins at 3:00 and live servant auction follows with everything concluding by 4:00.  The servant auction is the auction of youth to be your servants to do housework, yardwork, babysitting, and the like.  For more information contact Samantha Hudson at Grace Lutheran Church of Hallock or Beth Murray at First Lutheran Church of Karlstad.

Ginger Bread Houses

The youth (except the confirmation classes) will be visiting The Meadows assisted living center on Wednesday, Dec. 3, right after school lets out for the afternoon to work with the residents on making gingerbread houses under the direction of Kay Bostrom and Laurie Lofstrom.  This will be a wonderful opportunity for the younger and older people to work together on a fun holiday project.  All youth (except grades 8 & 9) should come over to The Meadows.

Brunch on Nov. 23

The youth who are going to the ELCA National Youth Gathering in Detroit, Michigan this summer are serving an egg bake brunch on Sunday, November 23, right after morning worship services at First Lutheran Church to raise funds to send them on their way.  Everyone is welcome.  The youth thank you for your donation to help them on their way.

Three Hours of Hallock

As a fund raiser for the 2015 National Youth Gathering in Detroit next summer, the youth of the county held a three hour relay race with food, music, and games at Grace Lutheran Church of Hallock.  There were 13 teams from throughout the county who participating in the race by biking, running, or walking.  Thank you to everyone who supported the teams.
